Flower picking near Adelaide is an Adelaide Hills story, with fields scattered through Hahndorf, Charleston and out towards the Barossa fringe at Freeling and Tarlee. It's a short trip rather than a big drive — most farms sit well within an hour of the CBD. The season runs long by u-pick standards, roughly September through April, but it comes in waves: mixed seasonal blooms across spring and autumn, a short mid-December to mid-January lavender window, and sunflower fields that peak in January.
Pricing ranges from a gold-coin donation at community sunflower days to ticketed experiences that bundle snips, a jar and a set number of stems, often landing somewhere between $20 and $55. Hahndorf Flower Farm is the standout for families after flexibility, since it keeps picking open across most of spring, summer and autumn rather than one short burst. Bloom timing shifts with the weather, so a quick call before you drive up the hills is always worth it.

The Adelaide Hills is the main hub, with farms around Hahndorf, Charleston and further out at Freeling and Tarlee towards the Barossa. You'll find mixed cut-flower paddocks, a dedicated lavender field and several sunflower patches within this small area, so it's easy to combine a visit with the Hills' usual cellar-door and cafe stops on the same day.
Hahndorf and Charleston are about 30-40 minutes from the CBD via the freeway, making the Adelaide Hills flower farms one of the closest u-pick clusters to any Australian capital. The Freeling and Tarlee sunflower paddocks push out closer to an hour, past the Barossa turn-off, so allow a little extra time for those trips.
Mixed blooms are available roughly September to April at the longer-season farms, but the two headline windows are narrower: lavender runs mid-December to mid-January, and sunflowers peak in January, sometimes stretching into February depending on rain and heat. Because these windows are short and weather-driven, check social media or call the week before you plan to go.
Ticketed experiences, including the lavender field and the pizza-and-flowers style sessions, are usually booked online in advance through the farm's own ticketing system, and popular dates can sell out. The community sunflower days tend to be more casual, gold-coin entry with no booking, but it's still worth checking their Facebook page for the current opening weekend before you drive out.
