Pick Your Own Farms

What fruit is in season in August?

August is late winter, and pick-your-own is still mostly a warm-climate story. Queensland keeps leading, with strawberries at their peak from the Scenic Rim and Brisbane to Bundaberg, blueberries ripe in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and citrus finishing its run in the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe. Western Australia's Swan Valley strawberry season kicks off this month, alongside continuing citrus in the Perth Hills. NSW keeps citrus, blueberries and lavender going, and sunflowers start appearing on the Central Coast ahead of spring. Up in the Top End, mango season begins around Darwin as the dry season carries on, joined by melons, pumpkins and tomatoes. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT are still largely closed for winter.

New South Wales

Blueberries continue on the Coffs Coast, citrus is ripe on the Central Coast and in the Hawkesbury, lavender keeps going on the Central Coast, and the first sunflowers of the season start appearing there too. Strawberry patches are between seasons in August in most Hawkesbury locations.

Victoria

Citrus remains the main crop typically listed for August, with mandarins and oranges still ripe in the Yarra Valley while most other farms stay closed for winter.

Queensland

Strawberries are at their peak from the Scenic Rim and Brisbane down to Bundaberg, blueberries continue in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and citrus wraps up its season in the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe while continuing further north in Bundaberg.

South Australia

August remains quiet for South Australian pick-your-own, with no crops typically listed as in season and most farms still waiting on spring.

Frequently asked questions

What fruit is in season in August in Australia?

Strawberries remain at their peak in Queensland's Scenic Rim, Brisbane and Bundaberg regions, and Western Australia's Swan Valley strawberry season begins this month. Citrus is widely available in NSW, Victoria, Queensland's Granite Belt and WA, blueberries continue in Queensland, and the NT's mango season starts around Darwin. Southern states remain mostly quiet through August.

Can you pick strawberries in August?

Yes, mainly in Queensland and, from this month, Western Australia. Scenic Rim, Brisbane and Bundaberg farms in QLD are typically at peak season, and the Swan Valley and Wanneroo in WA start their strawberry season in August. NSW's Hawkesbury patches are usually between seasons this particular month, so it's worth calling ahead if you're heading there specifically.

Is August a good time to visit the Swan Valley for picking?

Yes, August marks the start of strawberry season in the Swan Valley and nearby Wanneroo, running through to December in a typical year. Citrus is also still ripe in the Chittering Valley and Perth Hills at the same time, so it's a reasonable month to combine the two if you're planning a day trip from Perth.

What's in season in the Northern Territory in August?

August marks the start of mango season around Darwin rural and the wider Top End, running into early October in a typical year. Melons, pumpkins and tomatoes continue statewide, and citrus and passionfruit are both still going around Darwin and Katherine. It's one of the busier months for picking in the Top End's dry season.
