Pick Your Own Farms

Fruit picking in the Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Ranges climb up from Melbourne's eastern suburbs, with most of the picking farms around Silvan, Olinda and Wandin East roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the CBD. This is Victoria's densest patch of pick-your-own, built around a long cherry and berry run from late spring through summer: Blue Hills Berries and Cherries and Chapmans Berry and Fruit Farm both open at Silvan from mid-November, and berry specialists like Fielderberry Farm and Folly Farm Blueberries in Olinda keep raspberries and blueberries going into February and March. Rayners Orchard at Woori Yallock stands out for variety, running guided tractor tours through stone fruit, apples, pears and citrus across most of the year, while Sanders Apples releases ticketed autumn picking days each year. There's even truffle hunting at Truffle Valley in winter. With so many small growers, opening days and picking windows change often, so always confirm with the farm before heading up.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I pick cherries near the Dandenong Ranges?

Blue Hills Berries and Cherries, Chapmans Berry and Fruit Farm and Silvan Cherry and Berry Farm are all clustered around Silvan and open from mid-November into January. CherryHill Orchards and Cherry Haven, both near Wandin East, run similar seasons. Cherry availability can finish early in a hot summer, so call ahead before you drive up.

Where can I pick berries near the Dandenong Ranges?

Raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are grown at several farms including Fielderberry Farm and Avonsleigh Berries, with picking generally running from early December through to February or March. Folly Farm Blueberries in Olinda has one of the later blueberry seasons, typically January to February.

When is the best time to visit the Dandenong Ranges for picking?

Late November to February is the busiest stretch, when cherries and the first berries overlap. Apples follow from March through May at orchards like Rayners and Sanders, and truffle season at Truffle Valley runs mid-June to end of August. Check ahead, since ripening dates shift with the season.

How much does fruit picking cost in the Dandenong Ranges?

Prices vary by farm and crop. Blue Hills Berries and Cherries charges from about $18 for cherry entry, Chapmans charges $9 adult entry plus around $10/kg for cherries, and Folly Farm Blueberries charges about $20 for adults including 500g of blueberries. Always confirm current pricing when you call.

Do Dandenong Ranges farms need bookings?

Several do. Blue Hills Berries and Cherries, CherryHill Orchards, Rayners Orchard, Sanders Apples and Truffle Valley all either require or recommend booking, especially in peak cherry weeks and for guided tours. Smaller berry farms are more likely to take walk-ins, but calling ahead is still the safest approach.
